Day 3 – From Fontignano to Castiglion Fosco

The track begins in Fontignano towards the area of Pietrafitta where the lignite extraction activity that started at the end of the 19th century and ended in the early years of our century has left traces of industrial archeology.
Thanks to the lignite extraction numberless and precious paleontological finds of the Pleistocene have been found and now partly exhibited at the Luigi Boldrini Paleontological Museum, among the most important collections of Europe of its kind.
Along the shores of Lake of Pietrafitta, connected to the river Nestore that gives its name to the valley up to the Tiber, you reach the abbey of Sette Frati. Walking on the up-and-down path through fields and woods you cross the villages of Gaiche and Cibottola, finally reaching the small village of Castiglion Fosco.
