Vicolo Rigone

Vicolo Rigone is the street with the oldest buildings in the village, tower-houses leaning against each other almost to support each other.
In the depths of this alley the life of times past pulsated. Blacksmiths, potters, carpenters and other artisans populated the village when it was necessary to independently provide for daily needs, because of the isolation of the village so far from other inhabited centers and the difficult roads.

Some doors with external steps recall the “doors of the dead” of which some Umbrian towns are rich, including Todi. Tradition has it that they served to bring out the coffins through a door different from the one used by living people, in reality they were the entrances to the houses, which were generally located on the upper floors, while the shops opened directly in the alley at street level.

Let’s stop at number 15: on the keystone of the door you can still see the templar cross under the knot of Solomon, unfortunately very ruined because in pietra serena. The knot of Solomon consisting of two linked rings is a symbol of indissoluble union between Man and the dimension of the divine. It is the symbol of the Knights of Malta, who probably had a seat here at the time when these were the lands of the Popes.
