Water and Saffron Hiking

Walking time: 4 hrs

After a short walk along a comfortable and panoramic country road – only partly paved – immerse yourself in the countryside of Città della Pieve through a panoramic inter-farm road between olive groves, cultivated fields and vineyards.
Once at a former farmhouse, take the path reaching a small and very suggestive hilly lake (that servs a system of irrigation of lowland land) obtained about 40 years ago by building a dirt barrier along the ‘Fosso della Scarniceta’ – ‘Scarniceta Ditch’.

Keep going and enter a path following the ditch and whose route is entirely within a coppice to reache the Farm of Alessandro Mazzuoli where tastings based on Saffron are possible.
The farm is housed in what was once a rural building of the early 20th century. The square-shaped building or Leopoldino style, particularly valuable and rare, is included among the prestigious farmhouses of the Municipality of Città della Pieve.
In the 50s, the farm grew tobacco that’s the reason why you see barns to dry tobacco around the main building.

Have a little rest then pursue the trail, retracing your steps.

At the end of the route, on prior request you may visit the Zafferaneto Urbano – a saffron field inside the walls of Città della Pieve – free of charge.
