Caprara - Cavacchione - Madonna degli Angeli

Circular trail with panoramic views of the Val di Chiana

Walking time: 5 hrs and a half

You may choose between a short trail – 4.35 miles, 4.5 hours – and a longer one – 6.52 miles, 5.5 hours.

The starting point is the Belvedere of the Church of S. Pietro – where a fresco by Perugino is preserved – which until 1815 was dedicated to S. Antonio Abate celebrated on January 17th. Up here a beautiful view of the southern part of the Val di Chiana – west of the Pievese territory – is to be enjoyed. In fact, the central stretch of the itinerary descends along one of the canals of the ‘Bonifica’ – i.e. land Reclamation.

Once, there were many country paths to pass from one ridge to another but, today they are closed by vegetation. Anyway, a ‘shortcut’ allows to easily get to the church of Madonna degli Angeli, cutting through Concello and going up before Palazzo Baglioni along a small road that descends into a ditch among chestnut trees, maples and poplars then goes up to Cavacchione (short trail) or go downhill from Caprara to the floor of the Valley, then through the village of Ponticelli and up again from the Strada del Cavacchione along a stretch of the Via Romea Germanica that is be traveled to the north.
