Castle of Polvese Island

Castle of Polvese Island

Historical place Village / castle

Mentioned for the first time in some official documents of the fifteenth century, it is placed on a slope and it has an irregularly pentagonal plan with 5 towers connected to each other by a continuous passage on the top of the walls. A sixth tower was inserted in the middle of the southern wall to protect the entrance door to the castle.
The keep faces the top of the island, in a dominant position with respect to the rest of the building: with an octagonal plan, it is built with worked stones and embellished with terracotta brackets.
The interior seems to lack buildings intended for everyday life. Certainly, the castle has never been a stately home, but a place of refuge and defense of the inhabitants in case of attacks.
