The imposing Città della Pieve Cathedral conceals underground spaces that testify to the earliest stages of the building’s and the city’s history.
During the floor renovation in 2013, a column base, a floor, and a wall structure connecting to the rooms below were discovered near the high altar.
In these spaces, imposing sandstone pillars can still be admired that once supported ribbed vaults. The remnants of the ribs still present and the walls display pictorial fragments attributed to Benozzo Gozzoli, one of the greatest exponents of the Italian Renaissance, who died in 1497.
