Birthplace of Saint Margaret of Cortona

Birthplace of Saint Margaret of Cortona

Historical place

Saint Margherita da Cortona was born in 1247 in Laviano, a small hamlet of Castiglione del Lago where there are the greatest testimonies related to her cult. She belongs to the Third Franciscan Secular Order and she was proclaimed a saint in 1728 by Pope Benedict XIII.

The tales of Margaret’s numerous ecstasies and visions of her, of her dramatic and tumultuous life, contributed to making her one of the most popular saints in central Italy.
Her birthplace is located within the structure of the Agriturismo Santa Margherita, part of the Laviano County estate, a few steps from the chapel dedicated to her and the ‘Quercia del Pentimento’ (Oak of Repentance), the tree that witnessed that profound mystical crisis that took her up to Sanctification.
