The church is located just outside the city walls, where, according to tradition, a cart pulled by two Chianina oxen stopped with the remains of Blessed Giacomo Villa, an important figure in the history and tradition of Pieve. Born in Città della Pieve in 1270, he studied law and became a lawyer, dedicating himself to the defense of the poor and oppressed, for which he was also known as the ‘martyr of justice’ or ‘Almoner’.
His remains are preserved here, and there is a painting by Pomarancio depicting him kneeling, pleading with the Virgin Mary, seated amid gray clouds and dark symbols of plague. In the background is a city reminiscent of Città della Pieve.
The church preserves a rich Baroque interior, with an elliptical plan, reminiscent of Borromini’s style.
