Church of San Donato – Agello

Church of San Donato – Agello

Church

Erected just outside the castle walls at the service of the plebeian community following the renewed impulse of agriculture, the church seems to date back to a period prior to 1115, the date on which it is mentioned for the first time in a historical document. San Donato remained under the jurisdiction of the Monastery of San Pietro in Perugia at least until 1859, when it appears that the west facade was enlarged at the expense of the Monastery.

Restored and reopened for worship in 2011, the church has an appreciable historical and artistic value, so much so that it was declared by decree of the Superintendency of Umbria in 2008 ‘building of cultural interest for its historical, environmental and architectural profile as well as the rich internal decorations’.
