The church was built in 1508 on the site of a source considered thaumaturgical and which is now incorporated in a compartment in the part below the apse.

The miracle linked to the sanctuary tells of a little girl to whom the Madonna appeared while she was intent on drawing water from a source (which was located in the place where the church was later built). She returned home, she told of her apparition, but she was mocked by the majority of the population, who asked her to prove what she said. Returning to the source, the little girl confided the people’s incredulity to the Virgin who told her to fill a container and place it upside down on her head. Upon her return with the full jug despite it being overturned, everyone believed in her apparition and did their utmost to build the church.
