The construction of the Chiugiana castle dates back to the first centuries of the Middle Ages, a very important settlement from a strategic point of view, dominating the road between Perugia and Cortona.
The town is located along the slope of Mount Malbe and not built on the top of a hill, according to a pentagonal and non-circular plan, with the base facing the valley and the upper vertex facing the mountain. Each vertex of the pentagon was reinforced by a tower, of which the one located further upstream still remains visible today and in a good state of conservation.
